Grounds
Home / About the Hotel / Grounds
The extensive grounds are a magical haven for wildlife and fauna, including rare birds of prey, owls, red squirrels, dragonflies and butterflies in a myriad colours, wild garlic and rare orchids. The hotel has its own beehives which produce delicious, organic honey for the hotel.
The lawns and terraced gardens were designed by the famous doyenne of landscape design, Gertrude Jekyll and Queen Victoria are reputed to have sat beneath the magnificent magnolias growing on the south wall of the hotel.
The amazing diversity of this small estate makes it ideal for families: children can wander safely and freely within the grounds while couples, wishing to escape the hectic metropolis, can enjoy romantic coastal and woodland walks. Or stroll round the golf course — with or without clubs!
The tranquil landscape and Kitchen Gardens (producing a host of seasonal produce for our kitchens) are overseen by gardeners Kat and Andy. Explore the estate and spot them lovingly tending to all manner of flora and fauna: from beautiful roses to rare orchids or Chantaney carrots to homegrown watercress — fresh from the natural ponds. Delicious Priory Bay ceps, herbs and garlic are also harvested direct from our grounds and create mouth-watering dishes served in our award-winning restaurant.
